Aston Villa draw with Leicester City

Scorers:  Leon 26′, Daly 75′ ; Momiki 28′, Tierney 56′.

First up was a midlands derby between Aston Villa and Leicester City, with both sides looking to move out of midtable in the Women’s Super League.

The Foxes dominated the possession early, but Villa looked a threat on the counter attack and they took the lead after 26 minutes when good work from Kenza Dali allowed Adriana Leon an easy tap in.

That lead disappeared immediately though, with Yuka Momiki firing in an equaliser just moments later.

The game remained open heading into the second half, but after a sustained period of pressure the Foxes took the lead when Sam Tierney nodded home from a free kick. However, chances continued to flow for both sides and Villa clawed their way back to parity via England striker Rachel Daly, who latched onto a pass from Jordan Nobbs to fire home and level the score.

Both sides pushed for a precious winner, but in the end nothing could separate the pair, and they each had to settle for a point.

Manchester City thrash Liverpool

Scorers: Hemp 16′, Park 22′, Shaw 24′, 50′; Keating (OG) 84′

Manchester City continued their charge to the Women’s Super League title with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Liverpool.

The hosts dominated the opening phases of the game, but that all changed when City took the lead through Lauren Hemp just 15 minutes in, who tucked in a rebound after the Liverpool no.1 made a strong initial save.

Liverpool tried to rally once more, but were hit by a Manchester whirlwind as Park doubled City’s lead before WSL top goalscorer Bunny Shaw added an excellent third just moments later, finding the top corner from 25 yards out and leaving the game over less than halfway through.

Any hopes of a second half comeback from the Reds were shortlived, with Shaw adding her second of the game, and Manchester City’s fourth, just minutes after the interval. The game remained even despite the scoreline, though Shaw was only denied a hat-trick by the offside flag.

Liverpool gave a good account of themselves and even grabbed a late consolation goal with an excellent effort from Taylor Hinds, which rebounded off the Manchester City goalkeeper via the crossbar and over the line.

It was Manchester City’s day though, and they moved back to the top of the WSL ahead of Chelsea’s game later.
