WSL: Man City edge out Everton to keep pressure on title race

Manchester City continued their title challenge after their latest 2-1 win over Everton at the Joie Stadium. Gareth Taylor’s latest victory keeps the pressure on reigning champions Chelsea at the top of the Women’s Super League table.

Man City and Everton last met in December with the Sky Blues pulling off a comfortable 4-1 win at Walton Hall Park.

How it went

The opening minutes of the tie were almost exclusively dominated by the hosts. With just 15 minutes on the clock, Man City’s efforts were rewarded. A defensive mix-up saw Bunny Shaw through on goal and she slotted the ball beyond Courtney Brosnan to put her side ahead.

The remainder of the first half provided plenty of opportunities for Taylor’s side, however they were unable to extend their lead heading into the break.

Everton’s initially bright start to the second half ended when Lauren Hemp bagged a second for City just ten minutes after play resumed. The No.11’s shot sent Brosnan diving the wrong way as the ball rolled into the bottom corner. Hanna Bennison appeared to offer the Toffees a route back into the tie just five minutes later. The midfielder pulled a goal back looping the ball over Khiara Keating to reduce the deficit.

Despite the goal, Everton were unable to take anything from the clash, remaining ninth in the table. The win moves Man City top of the table ahead of title rivals Chelsea’s meeting with Leicester on Sunday.

Manchester City will host Chelsea in Thursday’s Conti Cup semi-final. The Sky Blues will then travel to face Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup ahead of their league meeting with Brighton.

Everton will welcome Chelsea to Walton Hall Park in the FA Cup. The Toffees will then host Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League before facing rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby.
