WSL: Aston Villa and Leicester continue search for first league win

The match held at Villa Park saw the Midlands teams play out a toothless and goalless draw as both Aston Villa and Leicester continue their search for a WSL win this season.

It was still a day of celebration for Aston Villa, as midfielder Jordan Nobbs broke the WSL appearance record and was presented with a framed jersey.

How it went

The first half

The two Midlands teams went head to head in a cagey first half at Villa Park. Despite a a vibrant crowd cheering the sides on. Leicester didn’t have a recognised striker in the matchday squad and it showed. The Foxes looked toothless going forward despite a great shift put in both attack and defence by Ruby Mace. Villa would have expected to test the Leicester goal more but the Foxes stood firm to see it 0-0 at the break.

The second half

Leicester made a change at the break, with Asmita Ale replacing CJ Bott in defence. The match was end to end but scrappy play saw neither team make inroads at goal. Leicester made enforced formation changes however as they only had defensive players to sub on, it saw them with only a few natural attacking options. In a frantic final few minutes Villa had their best chance through Anna Patten as the ball scrambled around the penalty area and from close range she found the rejuvenated Leitzig in goal who parried it away to safety.

Aston Villa and Leicester sit level in the table in ninth and tenth.

Leicester will be hoping for some good news on their injured attacking players as they face fellow WSL strugglers Everton at the King Power, already looking like a must-win for both sides. Villa travel away to the Joie Stadium to face Manchester City in search of their first win.
