Wrexham made their return to the English Football League today for the first time in 16 years … and their opening game turned out to be a thriller.
The Welsh side, co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, kicked off their League Two campaign at home to Milton Keynes Dons but it didn’t exactly go to plan for the Americans with their team conceding FIVE at the Racecourse Ground.
With star striker Paul Mullin absent after suffering a collapsed lung in a collission during the recent pre-season clash with Manchester United, Wrexham fell two goals down inside the opening two minutes courtesy of a Eoghan O’Connell own-goal and a Mohamed Eisa strike.
Jacob Mendy restored some hope just before half-time but a brace from Jonathan Leko threatened to turn this into a rout for the visitors.
Jordan Davies sparked dreams of a late comeback with a stunning strike from the edge of the box but Daniel Harvie added a fifth for the MK Dons in stoppage time.
The goals weren’t done there as Anthony Forde pulled another one back but it turned out to just be a consolation for Phil Parkinson’s side.
They face League One side Wigan Athletic next up in the EFL Cup first round before a trip to AFC Wimbledon next weekend.
