Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has admitted that he is having the ‘worst season’ of his career as he struggles for goals in the Premier League.

Mane scored Liverpool’s opener in a 2-0 win over Southampton at the weekend, his ninth goal of the season in the league.

The attacker has claimed he questions himself constantly and took several tests in order to find the root of his problems this season for Liverpool. He wants to keep working hard and get past this difficult period of his career in a red shirt.

Speaking to Canal+ Sport, as transcribed by The Mirror, Mane opened up on how he feels this year has gone for him personally. “This is the worst season of my career. I have to admit it.

“If you ask me what is wrong I will struggle to give you an answer. Personally, I don’t know.

“I have always tried to be positive, whether things are going well or badly. I question myself all the time.

“I even underwent a test to take a look at my body. Am I eating the right foods, or has everything changed? But they checked the test results, and everything is fine.

“I need to understand that in life there are ups and downs. I will keep on working hard – and perhaps in time this situation will pass.”

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

As it stands, Mane is on course for his worst goalscoring season in England. Since arriving in the Premier League with Southampton in 2014, Mane has scored 10 or more goals in the league in every single season and he is currently on nine with four left to play. This means that he could be set for his first year in the Premier League without hitting double figures, which could be why he is disappointed with how his season has gone.

Mane has not been able to blame the service being supplied to him as his Expected Goals is higher this season than in four of the previous six Premier League campaigns. He has never underperformed his XG by as much as he has this year, with him having scored nine goals from an expected 12.69. This suggests that his finishing in front of goal has declined this season, which Mane – as he explains himself – will now need to work on ahead of next term to get back to his best.
