Carlton Palmer has given his prediction for which three teams will be relegated from the Championship this season.

The battle at the bottom of the second division table is incredibly fierce as clubs prepare for the run-in.

There are eight rounds still to go to determine who will suffer the drop to League One.

Only Rotherham United look certain for relegation, with the Millers a distant 24th place in the table.

Otherwise, teams as high as 16th place Millwall will be worrying about the consequences of a poor end to the campaign, with the threat of relegation looming large.

Carlton Palmer makes Championship survival claim

Palmer has claimed that it will likely take up to 46 or 47 points to secure a place in the Championship for next year.

He believes anyone as high as Millwall in 16th could yet suffer relegation to the third tier.

“In my view, it’s very, very difficult to predict who is going to get relegated from the Championship,” Palmer told Football League World.

“The one thing you can say for certain is that Rotherham are gone, Rotherham are relegated from the Championship, so it’s two from, in my mind, Millwall down.

“Millwall are in 16th place on 43 points, from Swansea City upwards on 46 points, they’re safe.

“So it’s Millwall, Blackburn, Plymouth, Stoke, QPR, Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday.

“Sheffield Wednesday are on 38 points, Huddersfield 39, Birmingham 39, QPR 40, Stoke 41, Plymouth 41, Blackburn 42.

“I think 46, 47 points will be good enough to keep you in the division.”

Carlton Palmer backs Sheffield Wednesday's form

The 58-year-old has backed his former side Sheffield Wednesday to avoid the drop given their recent form.

“I thought Sheffield Wednesday were dead and buried but they went on an unbelievable run, they’ve lost their last two games but you can’t be too hard for losing them because of the teams they’ve played,” Palmer added.

“Ipswich was a disappointing result, losing 6-0.

“They’re next game is a cup final, they’ve got Swansea at home, they’ve got to register three points against Swansea, then they’re away to Middlesbrough and QPR.

“That will decide their fate, in my opinion.”

Carlton Palmer picks his relegated Championship trio

Palmer believes that Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town will join Rotherham in suffering relegation to League One.

“It’s whichever side, the only teams at the bottom six I’ve said, Millwall downwards, the form teams have been QPR and Sheffield Wednesday,” he continued.

“So, if QPR and Sheffield Wednesday can continue their form, I think they can get out of it.

“I’m looking at Birmingham City, they’re in free-fall at the minute, three defeats in their last six games, so if I’m calling it at the minute, Rotherham, Birmingham City and then it’s a close one between Huddersfield Town and Plymouth.

“I’ve got to go with, I think Plymouth will get a result, so if I was put on the spot now I would go Rotherham, Birmingham and Huddersfield relegated from the Championship.”

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl

Championship relegation battle is still anyone’s guess

Only Rotherham are certain to drop into League One next year, as any of these teams could suddenly catch form and avoid relegation.

Sheffield Wednesday were in a terrible position when Danny Rohl took over, so their rise deserves a lot of credit even if they are still in the bottom three.

If the Owls can stay up then it will be a remarkable achievement from the German coach.

Stoke and Plymouth’s recent form has also been worrying, and Blackburn have a terrible last eight games to get through, so it is still very difficult to say with any certainty who will be in the bottom three at the end of the campaign.
