On Monday, Real Betis officially announced what has been known for some time: Guido Rodriguez’s departure. The World Cup-winning pivot leaves upon the expiry of his contract, which was not renewed – this was despite the best efforts of club officials, who were desperate to convince him to stay.

Despite it being known for some time that Rodriguez would be leaving Betis, his future remains up in the air. He had an verbal agreement with Barcelona, but that expired at the end of May. The Catalans are still interested in him, as revealed by MD, but they cannot guarantee a contract offer until their return to La Liga’s 1:1 rule is official.

If Rodriguez shows patience, he can sign for Barcelona – his preferred choice. However, if he chooses to decide his future as soon as possible, he will have other options. One of those is Atletico Madrid, who are in the market for another midfielder.
