French midfielder Blaise Matuidi announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35-year-old.

Matuidi was a key component in the heart of France’s midfield during their victorious 2018 World Cup campaign, featuring 84 times for Les Blues over the course of his illustrious career.

“I think it’s time to move on but I’ll carry a lot of great memories in my heart,” he said.

“I had the sort of sporting career that I never dreamt I would have, but the moment has come for me to say stop. It’s a special moment, but a hard moment too.”

The 35-year-old won five league titles with PSG before moving to Italy with Juventus, where he also won the Scudetto three times.

In 2020, Matuidi moved to the US and joined Phil Neville’s Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, for whom he played 48 times.

The Frenchman was under contract with Inter Miami until January 2023, but was left off the team’s roster in 2022, and becomes the first 2018 World Cup winner to hang up their boots.
