In what was a chaotic game of football in the first half, Ghana lost 2-0 to Uruguay and were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup. This meant that the African outfit ended the competition with one win in the group stages and only three points in just as many games.

Despite the disappointment, there were promising signs – especially in the first two games. They were close to getting something out of the game against Portugal and beat South Korea in a thrilling game. In some ways, it was the battle with themselves relating to the tie in 2010 against Uruguay that perhaps hampered them mentally against the South American outfit.

Most impressive player: It was a tournament which may well go on to be remembered for Mohammed Kudus’ rise to prominence at the highest level. The Ajax man showed that he might be the real deal – something that was expected from him anyway. But the youngster got to show his skillset at the highest level of the game and this will lead to an increase of his valuation.

Biggest disappointment: Andre Ayew’s penalty miss against Uruguay didn’t just play a vital role in helping the South American side winning, it brought back some ghosts of 2010 back into the minds of everyone and that, in itself, was a disappointing moment for many associated with Ghanaian football. If Ayew had scored, they could have made it to the next round of the competition.

Grade: C – A decent tournament with a couple of good performances, but the Uruguay game was a downer.
