Kylian Mbappe scored an incredible brace to force the 2022 World Cup final into extra time out of absolutely nowhere.
It was a dominant first half performance from La Albicelestes, who fully deserved their 2-0 lead at half time.
The only surprise was that it took 23 minutes for Lionel Scaloni’s side to take the lead.
And when they did, it was from the left boot of Lionel Messi
Angel di Maria did brilliantly to win a penalty after beating Ousmane Dembele and Polish referee, Szymon Marciniak, didn’t hesitate in pointing to the spot.
Soft? Certainly. A penalty? Probably.
There was absolutely no doubt what would happen next as Messi stepped up and sent Hugo Lloris the wrong way.
While the award of the penalty may have been controversial, there was absolutely nothing controversial with Argentina’s second from Di Maria.
They broke quickly and Messi’s flick led to Alexis Mac Allister breaking free. His pass to Di Maria was perfect, who finished with aplomb.
Two-nil after 36 minutes and the Lusail Stadium was bouncing with tens of thousands of Argentines.
However, two goals in just 97 seconds from Mbappe forced the final into extra time.
The first was from the penalty spot at a time when it looked as France were down and out.
Then, minutes later, a brilliant one-two with Marcus Thuram saw Mbappe produce a stunning volley past Emiliano Martinez.
Extraordinary.
Mbappe had been anonymous before his two goals out of absolutely nowhere rescued France against Argentina.
Argentina and Messi appeared to be easing their way to a third World Cup and had silenced Mbappe in the meantime.
But Mbappe proved why many believe he’s the best player in the world right now.
He stepped up from 12 yards, grabbed the ball and gave France hope from 12 yards.
But his equalising volley was just astonishing.
Does he and France go on to win the World Cup final in extra time and penalties?
We’ll soon find out…
