Guillermo Ochoa is a bona fide World Cup legend.
The Mexican goalkeeper has now played at five different tournaments after donning his nation’s jersey against Poland on Tuesday evening in Qatar.
Ochoa’s first appearance at a World Cup finals came in 2006 and ever since then, he’s grown into both a household name and cult hero.
The shot-stopper turns into a hybrid of Lev Yashin and prime Manuel Neuer on the biggest sporting stage of all and it really is brilliant to watch.
And against Poland, Ochoa – who plays for and captains Mexican side Club America – activated ‘World Cup beast mode’ once again to thwart Barcelona superstar Robert Lewandowski.
Just before the hour mark, the European nation were awarded a dubious penalty after VAR stepped in for the umpeetnh time at the Qatar tournament thus far.
That gave Lewandowski the opportunity to score his very first World Cup goal and he rarely ever misses from 12 yards.
But when it comes to Ochoa and World Cups, no penalty taker is safe – no matter how good they are.
The goalkeeper sent the Mexican fans inside the stadium wild by producing a brilliant save to thwart Poland’s main man and record scorer.
Check out the lastest piece of magic from Ochoa on the World Cup stage…
The man just lives for the big occasion – what an absolute icon!
Ochoa is the first Mexican goalkeeper in history to save a penalty at the World Cup outside of a shootout situation.
Well played, Guillermo.
As for poor ol’ Lewandowski, his long, long wait for a World Cup goal goes on…
Ochoa’s marvellous penalty save on Lewandowski made sure Mexico left Stadium 974 with a point, which certainly isn’t the worst outcome for them.
However, it’s a result that Argentina and Lionel Messi will be left buoyed by after their shock 2-1 defeat to minnows Saudi Arabia earlier in the day.
La Albiceleste’s next World Cup group stage match is against Ochoa and Mexico on Saturday evening, which promises to be an absolute corker.
