The World Cup has seen some incredible free-kick goals in its history, from Ronaldinho’s against England in 2002 to David Beckham’s vs Colombia in 1998.

Deadball specialists have stolen the headlines on the world’s biggest stage, and in 2014 Brazil defender David Luiz added his name to the list with his strike against Colombia.

Brazil’s 2014 World Cup campaign

The 2014 World Cup saw Brazil go into the tournament as one of the favourites. They began their campaign in Group A alongside Mexico, Croatia and Cameroon, where they topped the group with seven points after securing two wins.

The round of 16 had Brazil fans sit on the edge of their seats after Luiz’s first goal of the competition was cancelled out by an Alexis Sanchez equaliser for Chile. Brazil’s fate in the competition would be decided by a penalty shootout, where Neymar’s spot kick proved to be decisive as they advanced to the quarter-finals.

Brazil 2-1 Colombia

In the quarter-finals against Colombia, Brazil would take an early lead after Thiago Silva got on the end of a corner from Neymar.

Silva’s goal ignited confidence as Brazil held onto the lead going into the second half. Colombia did grab a goal, but it was ruled out for a foul.

However, Brazil soon extended their lead courtesy of a phenomenal free kick from Luiz. The defender stepped over the ball from between 30-35 yards out and struck it with the inside of his foot, causing it to fly over David Ospina and dip under the crossbar in what can only be considered as one of the greatest free kicks in World Cup history.

Brazil advanced to the semi-finals, but it would be here where their World Cup journey came to an end after a devastating 7-1 loss to eventual winners Germany, in one of the most shocking World Cup scorelines of all time.

After 20 years of not holding the trophy, Brazil will be looking to add a sixth to their collection as the winter World Cup in Qatar begins on Sunday.
