Women's Euro 2022: UEFA yet to decide on Russia participation or replacement | OneFootball

UEFA are yet to formally decide if Russia will be permitted to participate at Euro 2022 or if they will be replaced at the tournament, despite the championships kicking off in three months.

Russia qualified for this summer's tournament in England, but they have since been suspended from all international football by FIFA following the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Russia were not allowed to compete in March's men's World Cup qualifying play-off against Poland, who progressed at their expense. However, they are yet to be formally removed from Euro 2022, and as a result no replacement has been announced either.

When questioned on Thursday about Russia's presence at Euro 2022, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: "We are in a hurry to decide about this issue. We will have to take the decision soon."

Russia were suspended from all international and European domestic football back in February. Euro 2022 begins on 6 July, with the opening group game for Russia, or whoever is selected to replace them, taking place on 9 July at Leigh Sports Village near Manchester.

Portugal - the team Russia beat in the play-offs to qualify for Euro 2022 - are expected to take Russia's place in the event of expulsion. Ukraine and the Czech Republic also missed out on qualification via the play-offs, having lost to Northern Ireland and Switzerland respectively.

Switzerland have been drawn in the same group as Russia, and in February announced that they would refuse to play them in their opening group match of the tournament.
