Women's AFCON 2024: Official—CAF launches investigation against Algerian team
On July 10, 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that it has opened an investigation into the Algerian women's national team currently in Morocco. This action concerns alleged breaches of CAF statutes and regulations during the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The allegations against the Algerian delegation are numerous. Moroccan media have reported a systematic removal of any reference to Morocco, the host nation of the tournament. This censorship strategy extends to all aspects of Algerian team communications. According to various sources, several incidents have drawn attention: the removal of the official "Morocco 2024" logo from team visuals, replacement of Royal Air Maroc sponsor logos, censorship of references to the host country, and even the use of black tape to cover these elements on the bench and other materials.
"The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into the Algerian women's national team for alleged violations of CAF statutes and regulations during the ongoing CAF TotalEnergies Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2024. CAF will make no further comment on this matter until the procedure has been completed," reads the statement from the pan-African body.
This controversy erupts during the Women's AFCON 2024, which runs from July 5 to 26 across multiple Moroccan cities. The continental governing body refuses to comment further while the investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, the account "Algérie Football Média" has shared images displaying similar actions in other matches, such as Senegal vs. Zambia, suggesting a broader trend.
