Winner takes all as Rangers v PSV becomes one-off final

In many ways, last night’s result at Ibrox was actually ideal for Rangers, and while we don’t have a cushion to take to Holland, tellingly we have nothing to protect either.

At the end of the 90, it was game reset, tie reset and the result in Govan was erased.

It instead travels to the Netherlands for a one-off final, a 90-minute or more shoot out to get a place in the UCL group stage.

Now, the last time we were in a one-off shoot out at a level close to this we lost, which was of course Seville.

And our performance in Belgium wasn’t inspiring either.

But this is a bit different.

Because we have no lead to protect, we, like PSV, quite simply have to go for it – we have to set up to attack and to win on the night, because we can’t get away with a draw.

We really hope Gio does not set up for a penalty shoot out because we’d hardly feel confident about that either, not at this level anyway.

No, we find ourselves in a complete winner takes all scenario next week and unfortunately PSV have experience of this.

In the third round they held Monaco in Monte Carlo, before the tie returned to the Philips Stadion where the Dutch prevailed with an extra time winner from Luke De Jong.

So they have success already this season in this competition with this scenario, and it’s up to Gio to find a way around that.

But it is a hard reset.

A one-off final.

And there’s a CL place up for grabs.
