There has been a subtle but notable shift in the narrative surrounding AEK’s pursuit of Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers. While earlier reports strongly suggested the Greek giants were closing in on a move for the Nigerian forward, the latest comments from AEK boss Marco Nikolić may have cooled that speculation significantly. The manager, speaking after his side’s 6-0 friendly victory over amateur side Vesthoek, gave little away but stated in no uncertain terms that he is comfortable with the attacking options currently at his disposal. With Zini, Pierrot, Martial and even Eliasson named as viable attackers in the squad, it appears the urgency to sign anyone new up front has eased.
Rangers have been looking to offload a number of fringe players this summer in order to reshape the squad under new manager Russell Martin. Among the most high-profile names mooted for departure is Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers who arrived at Ibrox with plenty of promise but failed to win over the support. Despite a modest goal return in a struggling side, his performances often left much to be desired. Now with Rangers in a rebuilding phase, Dessers is one of several players expected to move on if the right offer materialises.
However, the emerging stance from AEK could pose a serious problem. Nikolić has hinted that although the club is active in the market, the striker position is no longer a priority. This is a marked departure from what had been widely reported earlier in the window. For Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers this could mean his clearest escape route is suddenly far less certain. That is not ideal for Rangers either who were clearly hoping to secure a sale to help fund their own incoming business.
“No, because in attack we are in a good place with Zini, Pierrot, Martial and even Eliasson. We are working on the left-back, but we have time. Full-backs are always a tricky issue in the market. It is not a big problem. We are also looking for a player in one other position.”
The fanbase itself has been deeply divided over Dessers since day one. Some believe he was never suited to the pressure and expectation that comes with playing at Ibrox, while others argue he was never properly serviced in a system that did not complement his game. Either way the consensus among many supporters was that a fresh start for both club and player would be best. The Greek Super League would have offered him a less intense environment and a chance to rebuild his reputation in a new setting. But with AEK cooling their pursuit, Rangers fans are split on whether to persist or push harder for a sale.
Rangers had reportedly been in advanced discussions and while no fee was ever confirmed officially, figures in the region of £4 million were mentioned. That would have represented decent business for a player who did not fully settle in Glasgow. But if the Greek side are now pulling back from the table, Rangers could be left with a forward they are not convinced fits into the new plans, especially with the arrival of new attackers and Martin’s preference for different tactical profiles.
There is still time in the window and much can change. AEK could reignite their interest later in pre-season or another club could come forward if Dessers features and impresses in friendlies. But for now Rangers may have to pause and rethink how best to proceed with a player they were prepared to part with. Finding the right buyer is never easy and in the current market selling players who have struggled in previous seasons can be particularly difficult.
For Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers it could mean staying longer than expected unless the situation shifts once more. Rangers will be watching closely and hoping a solution is found that suits all parties.
