Will Lankshear features: 3 perfect PL loan signings Millwall should already be eyeing

It would make sense for Millwall to dip into the loan market this summer.

The Lions endured quite a disappointing 2023/24 campaign, but after an incredibly strong end to the season, they finished 13th in the Championship table. The side was overseen by three different managers last season and there were huge worries about relegation at one stage, but in came club legend Neil Harris to steady the ship and guide them to a mid-table finish.

This summer is huge for Millwall as they will be looking to make great strides and with Harris in charge, they have a strong chance of finishing in the top half. One concern for the Lions at this stage is that they could be set to lose their star man, Zian Flemming. According to the South London Press, newly-promoted Ipswich Town, and Spanish clubs, are keeping tabs on the forward ahead of a summer move.

It is no secret that Millwall struggled for goals this season, but without Flemming's 14-goal contributions, which saw him top the club's charts for both goals and assists, the Lions would have been in serious trouble. Therefore, if they do fail to keep hold of him, they must replace his attacking presence in the summer window.

That said, FLW takes a look at three potential loanees from the Premier League that Millwall should be keeping a close eye on in the coming weeks and months.

1 Will Lankshear

Tottenham striker Will Lankshear is setting the Premier League 2 alight this season, as his 18 goals in 19 games saw him top the league's goalscoring charts. Spurs' U21s won the Premier League 2 league phase and Lankshear was the man to lead the line, showing a clinical touch in front of goal.

If there is anything that Millwall need next season, it is goals, and Lankshear provides that in abundance. The striker is just 19 years old and is yet to make his senior debut, but his performances in the Premier League 2 have been enough to suggest he is ready for first-team football.

A loan move to the Championship makes the most sense as he can learn a lot about the physicality of senior football while proving to Tottenham he is good enough for first-team opportunities. Lankshear is already receiving interest from the Championship ahead of a potential summer move, with Middlesbrough said to be keen, so Millwall should certainly put their name in the mix.

The Lions now have a decent relationship with Spurs following the success of Japhet Tanganga's loan deal at the Den this season. The clubs have recently agreed a deal for a permanent move, but Millwall should not stop there. They should use their relationship with Tottenham in an attempt to sign Lankshear and give him his first taste of men's football.

2 Jamie Donley

Similar to Lankshear, Jamie Donley will be looking for regular first-team opportunities next season and that could involve a loan move to the EFL. This season he has proved that he is probably capable of a move to the Championship, so this is where Millwall should swoop in.

Donley has played as a second striker in 2023/24, behind the prolific Lankshear, and they have proved to be a dominant attacking duo. Signing just one of these stars on loan would be superb for Millwall, but signing the duo would simply be a dream.

The 19-year-old has grabbed a whopping 17 assists in all competitions for Spurs' U21s this season, but he has also scored a handful of goals himself, including a special one recently at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Donley, who has been compared to Tottenham legend Harry Kane in the past, would be a great signing for the majority of Championship clubs, so Millwall should use their Tottenham relationship once again to try and secure a deal.

Marc Leonard is a central midfielder that can used in both an attacking and defensive role. The 22-year-old has spent the last two seasons on loan at Northampton Town from Brighton and Hove Albion, and last season helped the Cobblers achieve promotion from League Two.

This season, he won Northampton's Player of the Year award and Players' Player of the year award after scoring six goals and assisting five from the middle of the park. Leonard started every single League One game for Northampton this season but will now likely move on to a bigger challenge.

He is unlikely to get much game time with Brighton next season, so a loan move to the Championship seems the perfect option for his development. Millwall should certainly be interested, but they would face plenty of competition from European clubs, as well as Portsmouth and Preston North End.

Signing Leonard on loan from Brighton would be a no-brainer considering his creativity and goal threat from midfield, but perhaps it is an optimistic move considering the competition.
