Sunderland are 90 minutes away from a Championship return as they prepare to face Wycombe Wanderers in this afternoon’s League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

Alex Neil’s side are looking to end a four year stay in the third-tier, but face a tricky hurdle in Wycombe, who defeated MK Dons in the semi-final stage of the play-offs.

As you can imagine, social media has been rife with messages of support for the Black Cats, including a classy message from Max Power, who has booked his place in the Championship next season after automatic promotion with Wigan Athletic.

He took to Twitter to send his former club a supportive message, with particular direction at right-back Lynden Gooch.

Power played for Sunderland between 2018 and 2021, with the midfielder starting the 2019 League One play-off final, albeit lasting just nine minutes before he was forced off in the 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic.

This season, the 28-year-old has starred for Wigan in League One, registering 12 assists and helping the Latics to the title on their way to promotion.

The Verdict

There’s a lot of the footballing world backing Sunderland today, with the hope that the League One giants can begin their rise back through the EFL.

Amongst that will be a number of the club’s former players, Power included.

He was part of a previous group of players battling this very battle in his three years at the club and, clearly, he will be delighted to see some of his former teammates finally get the job done.
