Wigan Athletic have had a good first half of the season in League One following relegation from the Championship.

The club had to deal with financial troubles once again in the summer, which led to them being given an eight-point deduction.

Due to the deduction, the Latics are sat in 18th position, just four points clear of the relegation zone.

Under the guidance of their former player Shaun Maloney, he is doing a stellar job despite the loss in points.

Tickle impresses against Manchester United

Wigan were able to show the nation what they were about when they hosted Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup.

Unfortunately for them, they suffered a 0-2 defeat, with goals from Diogo Dalot and a Bruno Fernandes penalty securing United’s place in the fourth round,

One Wigan player who emerged from the game with plenty of praise was goalkeeper Sam Tickle.

He made his first team debut for the club in the final game of last season, keeping a clean sheet.

The 21-year-old has now become Wigan’s number-one keeper this campaign, so far making 25 appearances in League One, keeping seven clean sheets.

Despite conceding two goals, Tickle made 12 saves, and faced an expected goals on target of 4.45.

This led to plenty of attention, with the FA Cup X account (formerly known as Twitter) praising Tickle for his performance.

There’s no doubt that Tickle wanted to make an impression, as he revealed in an interview with The Mirror before the game that he was a Manchester United fan growing up, because of his father.

Tickle interest set to intensify

After his stellar performance against Manchester United, it will no doubt have caught the eye of many potential suitors.

Wigan are wanting to offer him a new contract and he is open to signing fresh terms, according to The Sun.

His current contract is set to expire in 2026 after he signed a new three-year-deal back in April.

However, Tickle is subject of interest from Premier League side Everton, who are said to be one of many teams interested in his signature.

They see Tickle as a potential replacement in the future for England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

After his performance against Manchester United, Wigan now have to expect that interest in Tickle is going to intensify.

This may mean that it will be even harder to keep hold of him. Whilst he is open to sign a new deal at the club, you would expect that if interest does heighten, then he might want to force a move out of the club.

With his contract not set to expire for another two-and-a-half years, this puts Wigan in a great position if they do sell, as they could ask for a premium fee.
