Why would Alexander Isak join a club like Chelsea?

Wednesday brought media claims of Chelsea supposedly trying to take Newcastle United’s Rolls Royce, Alexander Isak, away from his St James’ Park showroom.

They brought a wry smile to my face.

It reminded me of a famous 1970s hit.

The lyrics of Stephen Sondheim’s well-covered musical hit song coming to mind.

They start like this:

“Isn’t it rich? Are we a pair? Me here at last on the ground You in mid-air, Where are the clowns?”

Amanda Staveley and Chelsea owner Todd Boehly both arrived at their respective clubs during the 2021/22 EPL season and apparently are on friendly terms.

From their starting point, Newcastle United have since flourished under new ownership.

On the other hand, from their privileged and self-entitled starting point, Chelsea has become an underachieving laughing stock.

They have literally blown and wasted millions on way overrated players. The likes of the woeful Cucarella and Mudryk immediately come to mind, whilst Enzo Fernandez and Caicedo were never worthy of becoming £100m+ purchases.

They now have yet another head coach in Enzo Maresca and who is he you may all well ask.

Maresca follows Tuchel, Potter, Lampard (on a temporary basis) and Pochettino as Boehly’s latest flavour of the month.

Of course, it will all inevitably end in tears, which brings me back to our own Alexander the Great.

Why in hell’s name would Alexander Isak join a club like Chelsea, that has been in decline in recent seasons?

Financial reward you may think?

However, Alexander Isak has already earned the right to potentially become United’s highest-ever earner.

I also personally don’t see the so-called bright lights of London blinding this lad.

I am extremely confident that Newcastle United will be challenging for a Champions League place in 2024/25. I also think that Chelsea will definitely not.

I’d love to know who this little jumped up West London club and their arrogant and horrible supporters actually think they are? I seem to remember that they weren’t much before Roman Abramovich racked up at Stamford Bridge in 2003.

Abramovich has gone and Chelsea have had their day.

Newcastle United are going to be the next big thing in the Premier League.

The days of us selling our crown jewels to jumped up cockney outfits are long gone.

I lived through the disappointment of Supermac going to Arsenal in 1976. The Waddler and Gazza departing for Spurs in the 1980s, even Demba Ba going to Chelsea in 2013.

‘Send in the Clowns’ is an old theatrical trope referring to when things go wrong on stage and the best way to paper over the cracks is by some spontaneous light amusement.

Hearing that supposedly Chelsea just fancied taking Alexander Isak to the West End on a whim really should be no laughing matter, but as I stated, it made me smile at least.
