Germany survive VAR scare to win 2-0

Host nation Germany were on the right end of several key decisions as they edged past a stubborn Denmark and into the last eight of EURO 2024.

Scorers: Havertz 53' [Pen], Musiala 68

The game, which was briefly halted in the first half due to a thunderstorm, was dominated by VAR decisions. Germany were denied an opener after just 3 minutes when Nico Schlotterbeck's header was ruled out, before it struck twice in the hosts nations favour minutes into the second.

First, it ruled out an opening goal from Joachim Andersen, before it judged the same player guilty of handball two minutes later, giving Germany a penalty and letting Kai Havertz hand his side the lead.

Germany never looked back, and doubled their lead through a beautiful run and finish from Jamal Musiala as Denmark were guilty of spurning several chances to get back into the game.

Florian Wirtz thought that he had added a third from the substitutes bench with an impudent finish, only for the offside flag to rule it out.

Into the next round, Julian Nagelsmann's side will face one of Spain or Georgia, who face off on Sunday evening.

Holders Italy out with a whimper after deserved Switzerland win

Scorers: Freuler 37', Vargas 46'

Switzerland have beaten Italy 2-0 after a dismal performance by the Azzurri

Italy started the game being pinned back by Switzerland, allowing wave after wave of attack to threaten their goal.

And the Swiss finally found their breakthrough when Remo Freuler burst into the box, controlling the ball well after it bounced up, and finishing with a fine volley.

Things went from bad to worse for the Azzurri just 27 seconds into the second half, as Ruben Vargas curled a delighful shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma and into the back of the net.

Italy almost had a lifeline when Fabian Schär – under no pressure in the box – looped a header against his own post.

The woodwork was struck again when Gianluca Scamacca crashed a shot against the post with 15 minutes of normal time remaining.

Switzerland will now play either England or Slovakia in the last eight.
