Nahki Wells has signed for Luton Town following his exit from Bristol City.
Luton Town have confirmed the signing of Nahki Wells following his exit from Bristol City.
The forward departed the Robins at the end of his contract after helping the club earn a play-off place in the Championship.
The 35-year-old joined Bristol City in January 2020, and was a crucial player for the club during his time at Ashton Gate.
He scored 10 times in 39 regular season appearances in the Championship last season, but his aim will now be to help the Hatters gain promotion from League One in the upcoming campaign.
Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield has revealed the reasons why Luton have made the signing of Wells this summer, highlighting his experience and knack for scoring goals.
He praised the player for his quality on and off the pitch, highlighting the immense amount of respect he’s earned within the game.
“Nahki is a proven goalscorer, has fantastic experience and good leadership too,” said Bloomfield, via the club’s official website.
“He’s someone with extreme know-how and a real desire to still go and score goals, a real desire to go and achieve something and a real desire to be a part of what we are building.
“He is someone who is so highly thought of in the world of football. Some of the references I had about him were just incredible.
“Someone who is obviously really well-known and liked within the game, highly respected and someone with a real know-how in the penalty area, which is what we’re really pleased to be bringing into the building.”
Wells has arrived at Luton with the club aiming to earn promotion straight back to the Championship at the first attempt, with their campaign getting underway on 1 August with a clash at home against AFC Wimbledon.
Luton will need increased firepower this season after an underwhelming display up front last year in the Championship, especially after the recent departures of Thelo Aasgaard and Carlton Morris respectively.
Wells is a proven goalscorer at a second tier level, so there’s every chance he can provide the goals needed for a promotion push in League One next season.
They’ve been able to convince him to take the step down from second division, which is an exciting endorsement for the Hatters’ upcoming plans, and will offer supporters renewed optimism that their team will be among the best in the division next term.
It was a disappointing season last year, but the club are now acting assertively in the transfer market to ensure they can bounce back immediately and make a swift return to the Championship under Bloomfield.
