Lincoln City are closing in on a deal for the Portsmouth defender
Lincoln City are closing in on a deal for Portsmouth defender Ryley Towler.
The Imps acquired Sonny Bradley from Derby County earlier in the window, and are now set to make their second signing of the summer in the same position.
Michael Skubala’s side finished 11th in League One last term, and will be keen to make the necessary additions to help boost them towards the top six next season.
Lincoln are turning attention to their defence in the early stages of the transfer window, first with the signing of Bradley and now they are targeting Towler.
According to Dan Marsh via X, the Imps are close to agreeing a deal for the Pompey defender.
Michael Skubala and the Imps are said to be long-term admirers of the 23-year-old, and are now finally set to get a transfer over the line.
It was revealed earlier this summer that Portsmouth were willing to sanction a sale for the defender. Luton Town were reportedly amongst a whole host of League One teams interested in securing his services, but Lincoln now look to have won that battle.
Towler played 14 times for the Fratton Park outfit last term, struggling to make a real impact in John Mousinho’s side following their promotion to the Championship.
The young centre-back has previously performed well in the third-tier, playing 20 times for Pompey during the 2022/23 campaign.
Towler has shown great potential in the past during his time with Portsmouth and Bristol City, with loan stints at Grimsby Town and Wimbledon allowing him to showcase his skillset at a tender age.
However, the past couple of years have seen the centre-back’s minutes dwindle, which isn’t what he needs at this crucial stage of his development.
A move to Lincoln City will allow Towler to get back to playing football consistently as a regular starter.
Despite dropping a division, it would provide the 23-year-old with the opportunity to grow once more and prove he is capable of operating at a higher level.
Skubala will inherit an exciting young prospect who has shown vast potential in the past and will be keen to utilise that talent to help push the Imps up the League One table next term.
