Leicester City have held talks with Chris Wilder over their managerial vacancy - and he could be exactly what they need.
Leicester City are yet to appoint a new manager to succeed Ruud van Nistelrooy, despite the new Championship season starting in just under five weeks' time.
After an embarrassing campaign in the top-flight, the Foxes were put out of their misery on April 20 when their relegation was confirmed.
Whilst the fans were understandably unhappy at how the season had played out, they hoped the one positive to an early relegation was that it would allow the club to make quick decisions to ensure everything was in place for pre-season - as they try to bounce back at the first attempt.
Yet, Leicester’s hierarchy delayed the decision to sack Van Nistelrooy until late June, meaning the players are back in training with no boss in place.
So, it’s a surprising situation, but we do know that work is going on in the background to name van Nistelrooy’s successor, with Danny Rohl having been strongly linked.
More recently, FLW exclusively revealed that Chris Wilder has held talks over the management vacancy with the Foxes, with the 57-year-old available after he left Sheffield United last month.
Interest in Wilder is understandable, as he has won promotion from this level before, which he memorably followed up with a 9th-placed finish in the Premier League with the Blades.
So, he knows exactly what it takes to be successful at this level, and it’s worth noting that he has just come off the back of a season where he led Sheffield United to 92 points, a total that regularly results in a top two finish.
Yet, despite his CV, it’s fair to say that Rohl is the more popular option among the fan base.
In fairness, you can understand why. The German took over a Sheffield Wednesday team that were destined for relegation, but he miraculously kept them up, before recording a mid-table finish in his first full season.
To do that, given the extremely challenging circumstances at Hillsborough, is very impressive. Plus, Rohl has proven himself to be tactically smart, and his coaching experience at Bayern Munich and Germany shows he is highly regarded in the game.
However, there is a strong argument to say that Wilder is a better fit for Leicester right now because of the need for promotion.
Whoever takes over at the King Power Stadium, even with a points deduction, provided it’s not substantial, will be expected to win promotion. The only target for the owner is to get the club back into the Premier League, and you can’t overlook someone who has been there and done it.
Whilst Rohl is clearly talented, and Sheffield Wednesday are a very big club, there's a different level of expectation at Leicester due to the resources they have available.
The Championship is a grind, and Wilder’s ability to build teams that can get results on a consistent basis shouldn’t be downplayed. It may not always be pretty, but he is successful.
Furthermore, Leicester will be aware of just how important it is to win promotion as soon as possible. Clubs that come down are at an advantage due to parachute payments, and even though Leicester aren’t going to be spending big this summer, they will still carry players on substantial wages.
Each year they spend in the Championship, the wage bill and financial power will drop, and, in theory, promotion becomes more unlikely.
Therefore, you really can’t downplay just how big a decision the key figures at Leicester are about to make, which is why Wilder may be the right call - even if many fans don’t see it that way.
