The League One season has now started to reach its endpoint, as we now start hitting the run-in.

Going into the season, Portsmouth, Derby County and Charlton Athletic were strong favourites to be near the top end of the league, all looking for returns to the Championship.

Pompey and Derby are both currently in the top two, with there being a four-point gap between second and third - making it probable that both teams will achieve their pre-season targets.

Charlton on the other hand have had a poor season, and the recent appointment of Nathan Jones has managed to drag them away from the relegation battle.

Here we take a look at where all three sides rank in League One’s most high-value teams, as per Transfermarkt.

Derby - €16.15 million

This is Derby’s second season in League One, with their previous financial troubles leading them to have 21 points deducted from them, resulting in relegation.

Last season the club finished in seventh, missing out on a place in the play-offs on the final day.

But this season, Paul Warne’s side are on course for promotion back to the second tier.

This is helped by an experienced squad with plenty of ability, mixed with some brilliant young players. This makes them the team with the third-highest squad value in the league.

Max Bird is their player with the highest value, at €2.8 million, although he is on loan from Bristol City. In terms of permanent players, it is Louie Sibley and Eiran Cashin, who are both valued at €1.8 million.

Portsmouth - €15.05 million

Pompey are at the summit of League One and look set for a return to the Championship for the first time since 2012.

Another club in the third tier due to financial troubles, they have been in and around the play-off places in League One for the last seven seasons, so it was only a matter of time before they finally achieved promotion.

Pompey have a young manager in John Mousinho, and with that young squad - which contributes to Pompey having the fourth highest value squad in the league.

Pompey’s highest-value player is said to be Tom McIntyre, who they signed in January from Reading. He is valued at €1.2 million.

Fellow January signing Callum Lang and Ryley Towler are their joint second-highest-value players, at €900,000.

Charlton - €12.70 million

Having been relegated from the Championship in 2020, Charlton have been a team that should be near the top end of League One.

The Addicks have failed to live up to the heights that were expected of them at the start of the season.

They had a brilliant summer transfer window on paper, including signing the highly coveted striker Alfie May - however, they are going to have to settle for a mid-table finish.

Despite this, they still have the fifth-highest-value squad in the division.

€1.8 million, but January signing Conor Coventry is their highest value permanent player at €1.5 million.
