Jon Newsome has insisted that the Queens Park Rangers showed more desire and willingness to fight than the Leeds United stars on Friday night.

Leeds’ hopes of automatic promotion received a massive dent when they were hammered 4-0 by QPR at Loftus Road.

The Whites are still second in the league table, but Ipswich could overtake them today if they get a positive result against Hull City and still have a game in hand over the Whites.

Leeds were favourites going into the game but QPR scored two goals in each half to confirm their survival in the Championship for one more season.

Newsome feels QPR played according to the atmosphere and the size of the Loftus Road pitch and worked their socks off to make life difficult for Leeds.

The former White stressed that the Leeds players did not show the same desire and commitment and it felt that they believed their own hype, which cost them the game in London.

Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds: “It’s a very smallish pitch; it’s tight and compact and the crowd are on top of you.

“QPR played a game of football that encouraged that.

“They were in and around, they worked hard, they covered the ground, they put tackles in, they closed down, they ran further and they wanted to do all the horrible sides of the game far better and with more enthusiasm than Leeds United did.

“Especially, in the first half we were trotting around, we were strolling and it looked like we believed we were good players.

“And when you do that at this level, it comes back to bite you on your backside.”

Leeds will almost certainly need to beat Southampton on the final day of the season but automatic promotion could be out of reach by then.
