QPR will be tracking Spurs’ transfer business intensely as it could boost their budget.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly opened transfer talks with Crystal Palace over attacker Eberechi Eze.

That’s according to reports from the likes of The Guardian, who claim that Spurs are looking to steal a march on Arsenal, the club that has, to this point, been most heavily linked to a move for Eze.

The 27-year-old had a tough journey to senior football, rejected by a host of clubs, including Arsenal, before pitching up at QPR and making a name for himself.

His performances at Loftus Road earned him a move to Crystal Palace. Luckily, Rangers were smart enough to include a sell-on clause in that deal, which now looks set to pay dividends with Eze going from strength to strength.

The sell-on clause QPR included in Eze’s Crystal Palace deal

Following an incredible Championship season with Rangers, which saw Eze notch 14 goals and eight assists in the league, the attacking midfielder understandably attracted Premier League attention from Palace, Fulham, West Ham and Newcastle United.

Palace won the race, agreeing a £16m initial fee for the then-England youth international, which had the potential to rise to £20m.

Given those add-ons were deemed “achievable” by a Sky Sports report at the time, it seems likely Eze satisfied them in his successful spell with Palace.

That’s not all. Sensing that the then-22-year-old Eze probably had an even higher ceiling, QPR cleverly inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause into the deal.

With Eze now one of the league’s best attackers, with the elite of the division vying for his signature, that looks an increasingly smart move.

Windfall QPR could receive in an Eze sale

According to The Guardian, Eze has a release clause as part of his Palace contract, which would force a sale should a club bid £68m or more, but that term is set to expire on 15 August, when the Premier League kicks off.

Sell-on clauses tend to be a percentage of the profit a selling club makes on the player, so presuming that is the case and Palace paid the full £20m to QPR as part of the original deal, an activation of the release clause would see the south London club net a £48m profit.

Based on those terms and figures, QPR would be in for a windfall of £9.6m should Tottenham get the deal over the line.

For reference, only Eze, Loic Remy and Christopher Samba have breached the £10m mark in terms of sales in QPR’s history, so it would come as a significant financial boost.

QPR may be left disappointed by Spurs and Arsenal issues

That is, however, the dream scenario for QPR. It may not all go that smoothly.

Based on The Guardian’s report, Spurs do not intend to reach Eze’s release clause, and getting a deal over the line could be interrupted by the fact that the player himself prefers a move to the Emirates.

The final destination is of little concern to QPR if the end transfer fee is the same, but the issue with relying on Arsenal for the move is that they reportedly need to sell the likes of Leandro Trossard before committing funds to Eze, creating another moving part.

The Eze saga is far from over, but with another club entering the race, it can only increase the chance that QPR finally get their sell-on windfall.
