Haji Wright has been sent home from the USA's Gold Cup run due to an injury issue
Mauricio Pochettino has provided an injury update on Haji Wright that Coventry City will not want to hear.
The United States are currently competing in the Gold Cup, with the side preparing for the knockout stages after winning all three of their group games.
Wright has been a part of Pochettino’s squad in the lead up to the competition, but only featured for 18 minutes in their opening fixture against Trinidad & Tobago.
The forward suffered an Achilles injury, which has ended his tournament prematurely, with the player returning to Coventry to begin his rehab process.
Pochettino has issued an update on Wright, confirming that he cannot fix the issue with his Achilles, so his tournament is over.
He praised the forward for what he brings to the side, but that he must now prioritise his recovery to full fitness above everything else.
“It’s always sad to see a player leave, because the group was very good, and he’s a very good guy, and adds very good quality to the group, [a] different option,” said Pochettino, via Coventry Live.
“He’s a player that can play in different positions in the attack.
“Yes, sad situation, sad for him, sad for the team, but I think we need to prioritise his process to recovery.
“He already arrived with some problems in his Achilles, and then we cannot fix the problem.
“He increased [his] pain.
“That is why that [this] is the decision that we take.”
Wright has been an important part of the Coventry squad since arriving in the summer of 2023 from Antalyaspor, with the forward featuring 71 times in the league across the last two campaigns.
Wright has been a very important part of the Coventry squad in the last couple of seasons, scoring 28 times in the Championship in the last two years.
An Achilles injury can take quite some time to recover from, depending on the severity, so the Sky Blues will be hoping it’s not too bad.
However, the fact he went into this tournament with it being an issue and he played anyway will be frustrating for the club.
Coventry will want to push for promotion next year under Frank Lampard, and the American should be a key part of that, but if he’s now out long-term then that will be a real blow for their upcoming campaign.
