Marcus Rashford is having to deal with lots of criticism and some fans are getting under the striker’s skin.

The 26-year-old was targeted during the warm-up before making his 400th appearance for United, as a substitute in the 4-3 win over Newcastle on Wednesday night.

It has been an underwhelming campaign for Rashford, scoring just eight goals, and it remains to be seen if he will make the England squad for Euro 2024.

As the substitutes went through a drill at Old Trafford facing the Stretford End, a fan is understood to have made his way down several rows of seats before telling Rashford (via The Mirror): “If you wanna go, go!”

Rashford reacted by breaking away from his warm-up and coming towards the man before being pulled away by team-mates Antony and Christian Eriksen.

The United fan in question was referencing the mounting speculation over Rashford’s future.

Sadly, the mood around Rashford has changed a lot over the past year. He signed a five-year contract last July which keeps him at the club until 2026.

Rashford replied while pointing to the badge on his shirt: “Why don’t you go?”

Another fan can be heard shouting: “Rashford, don’t like to him!”

Nathan Ridley reports: “Once they’d moved away for the next part of their warm-up, stewards approached the man in question before another fan – believed to be his son – led him back to his seat. The fan who targeted Rashford was also scolded by nearby supporters.”

Footballers know that criticism is bound to come their way, especially from the stands. Rashford should know better than to respond but we must note that it’s been a difficult season for him – seemingly off the pitch as well as on it.

Rashford found the back of the net 30 times across all competitions last season. Erik ten Hag needs to get him back playing at that level. The Dutchman downplayed the incident when asked about it during Friday’s press conference.

United take on Brighton on the final day of the Premier League season but can only finish as high as seventh in the table.

The Reds can only qualify for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup later this month.
