The international governing body of football is called FIFA; however, this is just an abbreviation and we can reveal what it stands for.

Football needs to have someone in charge to make the rules and also to make sure clubs are not doing anything they shouldn’t be doing like cheating, but FIFA also leads the work on producing World Cup tournaments.

Recently we saw the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar and many were very pleased when Argentina star Lionel Messi finally lifted the trophy for the first time.

FIFA also worked with gaming developers Electronic Arts to produce the football gaming franchise FIFA, which is the most popular football game in the world. FIFA 23 is the latest game which is out right now.

What does FIFA actually stand for?

Many may not know that FIFA is an abbreviation and for those wondering, it stands for the International Federation of Association Football. The reason it is abbreviated FIFA is due to it being French. In French, FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association.

This has been the name of the governing body ever since it was created in Paris, France, way back in 1904.

They govern the whole of football; however, there are also other governing bodies, like UEFA and the FA who help and govern specific leagues or competitions.

Who is the head of FIFA?

The current head of FIFA is Gianni Infantino. The Italian has been in the headlines a lot of 2022 whilst the World Cup was on and he is well known.

He became President of FIFA way back in 2016 and has expressed his desire to stay as President of the organisation for as long as he can. Infantino is 52 years old and was re-elected back in 2019. This shows how much his colleagues believe he is the right man to lead the biggest association in football.

What country owns FIFA?

Article image:What does FIFA stand for?

No country truly owns FIFA as it is an international governing body, but they did have to pick somewhere to set up their base.

The FIFA headquarters is in the European country Switzerland and is technically owned by FIFA as it is an association established under the law of Switzerland.

Why is the name FIFA changing?

For those who have seen the news about FIFA changing its name, they should know that this is only for the FIFA gaming franchise, not the governing body.

The franchise will not be called FIFA past FIFA 23 due to the fact that developers EA Sports and the International governing body FIFA are parting ways. There are no real reasons for it, but the two felt like they did not want to sign a new deal with each other. The new name for the game will be EA Sports FC.

For now, we do not know if FIFA intends to make their own game alongside EA Sports FC; however, if they tried this, it would be insanely difficult to compete with EA Sports because they have the rights to most of the teams on the planet.
