The Seagulls resume their campaign after the winter break in 10th position in the Barclays Women’s Super League table. Brighton & Hove Albion have taken eight points from their 10 league matches so far.
When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s fixture against Bristol City, Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Phillips said that her side know exactly where they want to improve.
“We feel that we have probably overachieved against the top four and underachieved against everyone else,” Phillips said.
“We’ve set out a very clear map, block-by-block, of the performances that we want to focus on to pick up points and be in a better position in the table. We are taking it game-by-game.
“We changed between systems quite heavily in the first half of the season. I wanted to evolve the team quite quickly but when you need to have confidence, you need to be sure of yourself in principles of play and a system of play. We’ve really focused on that and where we feel we can be dominant. We will continue to evolve the team as we evolve the squad. Belief in the group is really important and making sure that we have consistent messaging so that we can go and execute better.”
Turning her focus towards the Bristol City game, Phillips said that her side need to get the balance right between attack and defence.
She said “The thing about Bristol is that they’ve got a very clear way of how they’ve gone about their business. They’ve grown throughout that in the first half of the season. They’ve kept their belief and got results towards the latter end of games before Christmas.
“There’s been a real focus on making it difficult for teams to score, being exceptional inside their box and being one of the top teams in terms of converting their chances on target when they attack with pace to goal.
“We’ve prepared as we do for every game and we know the threats that we will have to manage. We need to make sure that we take calculated risks to prevent some of those opportunities.”
