West Ham United have made their move. A formal bid of €8 million has been submitted for highly rated Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor from Botafogo, as reported by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano on X. With Galatasaray and Everton also expressing interest, and Manchester United having monitored the player in recent months, this pursuit has all the makings of a late-summer scramble.
Victor, still just 20, has quickly grown into a commanding presence between the posts in Brazil’s top flight, attracting European scouts with his agility, distribution and unflappable composure under pressure. West Ham’s proactive approach suggests they view him as a long-term solution, perhaps even a successor to Alphonse Areola, who turns 33 this season.
Potter’s side, often more reactive than assertive in the market, appear to be learning. Whether Victor would arrive as an understudy or compete directly for the No.1 shirt remains to be seen, but the fee indicates ambition and belief in his potential. “West Ham submit formal bid worth €8m for Brazilian GK John Victor from Botafogo,” reads the straightforward but telling update.
Romano also reports, “Galatasaray and Everton also keen on John Victor after Man United monitored him in the recent months.” Both clubs present very different paths. Galatasaray can offer continental football, while Everton might tempt with Premier League exposure and a more direct route to the first team.

What’s striking is how quickly Victor’s name has accelerated up the shortlist of major clubs. United’s interest alone suggests real promise, and West Ham’s willingness to act swiftly could prove a masterstroke.
If West Ham are to close the deal, they may need to act even faster. A bidding war could erupt, and in today’s market, €8 million is a modest outlay for a player whose stock could soon soar. With Premier League squads now seeking tactical depth across every position, investing early in Victor may be seen, in time, as a very smart play.
There’s finally a sense that our recruitment is heading in the right direction. After years of watching other clubs pluck promising talents while we settled for short-term fixes, seeing West Ham go all-in on John Victor feels like a breath of fresh air. €8 million for a player who’s been tracked by Manchester United and is on the radar of Galatasaray and Everton? That tells you he’s got something special.
We’ve needed competition for Areola, and Lukasz Fabianski can’t go on forever. If this lad can settle in quickly, we might just have found our No.1 for the next decade. What excites me most is that we’re not waiting around for deadline day drama, we’re identifying potential early and going after it.
Whether he starts or grows into the role, it’s smart business and shows we’re planning long-term. Let’s hope we beat the others to it. If we don’t, and he ends up starring elsewhere, we’ll all be wondering how we let it slip.
This is the kind of move that makes you believe in the project again.
