West Ham are prepared to take Maxwel Cornet back from his Southampton loan, but the Saints must fulfil one condition from the Hammers first.
Southampton signed Maxwel Cornet on loan from West Ham at the beginning of the season. At the time, the signing made plenty of sense, considering Southampton needed some help out wide on their return to the Premier League.
However, now we are over halfway into the season, it is clear that the transfer hasn't materialised in the way which it perhaps could've. Russell Martin essentially forgot about Cornet and the attacker has been left to rot on the bench.
He would've had his interest perked when Martin was fired and Ivan Juric was announced. However, the Croatian has shown no desire to start him either. If anything, Juric would prefer for his contract to be ripped, so that another loan slot would open for the Saints.
A report from Claret and Hugh have addressed Maxwel Cornet's difficult situation from West Ham's perspective in an excellent manner. They explain that West Ham will only allow Southampton to cut Cornet's loan deal short, if the Saints honour their agreement by covering Cornet's wages in full.
From Southampton's perspective, this is an agreement they made, so they should stick to it. This way, they would be returning an out-of-favour player for a chance at redeeming his career while also opening up another loan spot for themselves.
Nowadays, Southampton are dealing with the consequences of the summer transfer window. They signed a few too many players on a panic-buy basis. Juric is forced to address this, before he even considers bringing any new players in.
Anyway, this is all secondary. The Saints' main focus should be on Man United tomorrow evening.
