West Ham United will entertain Manchester City at the London Stadium on Wednesday night as both sides try to pick up a victory and book a place in the next round of the EFL Cup. The Hammers managed to grind out a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend which will keep them in high spirits ahead of this game. Similarly, Man City picked up a dominant 4-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion, so they will be full of confidence about securing another favourable result in midweek.

Talking Tactics

David Moyes will probably opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation and is expected to ask his players to soak in all the pressure and try to catch the Man City defenders off-guard on the counter. Jarrod Bowen will get a chance to carry most of the goal-scoring burden as a makeshift centre-forward.

Pep Guardiola will set his team up in a 4-3-3 formation and could instruct his men to dominate the ball and create enough goal-scoring opportunities to win this game in the EFL Cup. A lot of the away team’s attacks will go through Kevin De Bruyne who will be Guardiola’s chief playmaker in the Hammers half.

Manchester City

Ferran Torres, Liam Delap and Raheem Sterling will all miss this cup game due to injuries. Otherwise, Guardiola should have a full squad to choose from in midweek.

Manchester City Predicted XI

Steffen; Egan-Riley, Stones, Ake, Zinchenko; De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Palmer; Mahrez, Jesus, Grealish

Key Men

West Ham United

Both Declan Rice and Mark Noble will have to be at their best if they are to stop the opposition from creating too many chances to find the back of the net. Jarrod Bowen will also have to give a good account of himself in the final third as David Moyes is likely to give Michail Antonio a well-deserved rest on the bench.

Manchester City

The defensive performance of Nathan Ake and John Stones could very well end up determining the fate of this cup tie. As mentioned earlier, Kevin De Bruyne will be expected to show his class as a key playmaker of Man City’s attack.
