Kante is seen as a talent for the future and it is understood that he is viewed as more of an academy signing at this stage for West Ham, who have been one of the Premier League’s busiest clubs in the summer window to date and were heavily linked with the signing of Mohamadou’s namesake N’Golo at Al-Ittihad last month.

Reports suggest that he could even be loaned back to the French club, who currently compete in Ligue 2.

The Irons have made no fewer than eight first-team signings so far as part of an overhaul for a new era under David Moyes’ managerial successor Julen Lopetegui, with Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Guido Rodriguez, Jean-Clair Todibo, Luis Guilherme and Wes Foderingham all brought aboard under technical director Tim Steidten.

West Ham also remain in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for Spanish midfielder Carlos Soler as they target an initial season-long loan agreement that would become permanent next summer.

There may be further exits from the London Stadium too before the 11pm BST transfer deadline on August 30, with Kurt Zouma still in discussions over his future. Several clubs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are still understood to be keen on his signature after a proposed switch to Shabab Al-Ahli in Dubai fell through last week after the French defender - who has been replaced as West Ham club captain by Jarrod Bowen - failed a medical.

West Ham have already sold the likes of Flynn Downes, Said Benrahma, Nathan Trott and Thilo Kehrer so far in this window, with Angelo Ogbonna, Joseph Anang, Ben Johnson and Divin Mubama all released at the end of their respective contracts, Johnson joining newly-promoted Ipswich and Mubama now expected to sign for champions Manchester City in a surprise deal.

The Hammers lost their first competitive match of the new Lopetegui era on Saturday evening, going down 2-1 at home to Champions League qualifiers Aston Villa in their Premier League opener thanks to a late winner off the bench from another player they tried to sign this summer in Colombian striker Jhon Duran.
