West Ham United have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton for a reported fee of £38 million.
The 21-year-old joins the Hammers on a five-year contract following an impressive 2024/25 season in the Premier League, where he stood out for his defensive contributions and progressive play.
A product of Sporting CP's academy, Fernandes is also a regular for Portugal’s U21 national team.
Fernandes attracted interest from several top clubs across Europe before opting to move to London Stadium. "I'm very happy to be here. I'm very excited to play for West Ham," he told the club's official website. "It’s a big club with a great project, and I want to give everything every day."
West Ham head coach Graham Potter praised the midfielder’s development and character, stating: :Mateus is a young player who has made impressive progress in the early part of his career. We believe his attributes will bring a different dimension to the squad."
