Premier League giants Chelsea fell to their first defeat of the new league season as reigning champions Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners at Stamford Bridge. Although many expected the Liverpool attackers to run riot, it was a defensive error that ended up changing the course of the tie. Despite starting well, Andreas Christensen brought down a charging Sadio Mane near the Chelsea box, and VAR instructed the referee to issue a red card. Mane opened the scoring in the second half before Kepa Arrizabalaga gifted the Senegalese speedster another goal a few minutes later. Despite some good performances all around, Lampard’s men were forced to face the harsh reality of the English game.

Chelsea Player Ratings Vs Liverpool

Kepa Arrizabalaga – 5

The Spaniard put in another horror display at the back as it was his mistake that led to the Reds’ second goal. Despite making the odd save, needs to be dropped from the side as soon as possible.

Reece James – 6.5

The Englishman dealt with the pressure being put by Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane in an effective manner. Tried to get forward and make things happen in the final third on occasion as well.

Andreas Christensen – 6

The Dane was solid in the opening stages of the tie, but a singular lapse in concentration prior to half-time changed the game entirely. He was sent off for bringing Mane down near the box.

Kurt Zouma – 7

The Frenchman didn’t make a single mistake over the course of that ninety and won multiple key headers in the Chelsea box as well. Covered himself in glory despite losing on the night.

Marcos Alonso – 6

The Spaniard was outclassed entirely for the first Liverpool goal, providing further proof that Alonso can’t play in a back-four. Didn’t have his usual influence in attack either.

Kai Havertz – 6.5

The German starlet was fluent with his passing and movement in the first half and linked up very efficiently with Mount and Werner. Was sacrificed by Lampard after Christensen got sent off.
