On Wednesday evening, Borussia Dortmund cemented their place in the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over PSV at the Westfalenstadion. Having come away from the Netherlands with a respectable 1-1 draw in the first leg, BvB knew that a win would guarantee their spot in the next round.

Goals from Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus ensured Dortmund’s progression, but it was not without its scares. Overall, PSV were able to tally up 17 shots, two more than Dortmund, and simultaneously missed two big chances to take the tie to extra time.

Most notably, Luuk de Jong missed a golden opportunity in the dying embers, seeing his 1 on 1 with Gregor Kobel fly over the crossbar. Nevertheless, with the final kick of the game, Reus eliminated any nerves that were coursing through the Westfalenstadion, sending Die Schwarzgelben into the final eight for just the second time since 2018.

After the game, head coach Edin Terzić reflected on the game when speaking to DAZN: “We played perhaps the best 30 minutes of the season. You could see exactly how we wanted to play football. Unfortunately, we stopped completely in the second half but defended very passionately.”

“I’m proud of the entire team; I’m proud to have been there today. We showed what we’re capable of when we play good football.”

When asked about what it means to reach the quarterfinal stage, Terzić explained: “A lot. That doesn’t come naturally to us. We earned it very hard over the two games.”

Finally, Terzić was questioned on his relationship with Julian Nagelsmann and whether they are in contact regarding the German national team: “Very close. We exchange ideas. That’s how you always handle it. You discuss all the personal details. The national coach can choose from a pool across Germany. He will make the right decisions for us. We expect exactly the same things that we expect for ourselves from the national team. We don’t always have to question every decision, but we also have to stand behind it.”

A 2-0 win rounds off a positive few days for Dortmund, having also prevailed 2-1 against Werder Bremen on Saturday evening to remain fourth in the Bundesliga table. Now, all eyes will be on the draw as they look to make the Champions League semi-finals.
