According to Manchester Evening News, Ed Woodward has sent out a message of optimism to Manchester United fans ahead of the upcoming 2021/22 season.

The Red Devils endured a promising but ultimately disappointing campaign last time around. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side finished second not just in the Premier League but also in the Europa League.

The 2020/21 campaign was our sixth trophyless season in the last eight years. Despite the setbacks, Woodward is optimistic going forward.

“With the foundations for long-term success in place, including significant initiatives to strengthen engagement with our supporters, we look forward to the upcoming season.”

United’s latest finances displayed a 4% drop in revenue for the quarter covering January – March 2021. The club’s net debt stands at £443.5million. According to the report, the club believes the loss represents a robust model that could withstand the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the new season coming up, Woodward, perhaps more than ever, has been made alert of the importance that fans have had on the game. With attendance absent for all but the last game of the season, United’s quarterly matchday nosedived from £29.1m to £1.6m.

“The absence of fans over the past year has proved that they are the lifeblood of the game.”

The Premier League permitted all the clubs to bring in 10,000 fans for their last home game of the season. It was a welcome return to normalcy in what was largely a season like no other.

Woodward remains optimistic that fans will have a greater role to play in the upcoming season. With attendance slowly being ramped up, there is growing confidence that normal service will be resumed off the field. Hopefully, this will be accompanied by success on the pitch as well.

“We remain optimistic about the prospect of fans returning to Old Trafford in larger numbers going forwards.”
