Former Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney has aimed a bizarre criticism at Pep Guardiola.

Rooney is on pundit duty for BBC Sport at Euro 2024 where Gareth Southgate’s side have struggled to live up to expectations.

England finished top of Group C, but with just five points, and two goals scored in Germany.

Their performances have been dissected by Rooney with a talented squad not clicking into gear.

Ahead of facing Slovakia in the last 16, Rooney has spoken about some of the deeper reasons for why England are so disjointed, with Guardiola a possible reason.

“I think the game’s got a lot more positional, with teams trying to score a perfect goal”, he said.

“I think it’s Pep’s fault! He brought that in. He’s mastered it, but everyone else seems to struggle to create clear chances.”

Rooney’s comments appear to have more significance for England’s trophy struggles as Spain won three major trophies during Guardiola’s time in charge of Barcelona from 2008 to 2012.

With Southgate set to leave his role as England boss after Euro 2024, regardless of their performance, Guardiola has been mentioned as a successor with his Manchester City contract expiring in 2025.
