Mauricio Pochettino says he is “so happy” for Christopher Nkunku after the forward came off the bench to score in the win over Brighton.

Nkunku has made just 13 appearances for the Blues this season because of injury problems but scored his third goal of the season with his 64th minute strike after Cole Palmer had given Chelsea an earlier lead.

Reece James’ late sending off and a stoppage time strike from Danny Welbeck set up a nervous ending for Pochettino and his side but the Chelsea boss says he is overjoyed to see Nkunku contributing for the club again.

“He was suffering a lot with the injury from the beginning of the season and before he arrived here, he was out of the World Cup because he was injured also,” he explained.

“Now he needs to build and be consistent but I’m so happy for him.

“In the end, he was so tired. So happy for him because he was suffering and now he is scoring goals and can be involved in the team again.

“It’s a very good thing for him. I am happy for him first and of course for the team because you are adding a player that is important for us.”
