Cesar Soto Grado’s decision to halt the match after Aurelien Tchouameni’s challenge on Samuel Lino marked one of the most tense moments of the entire game between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

The situation led to heated protests from players and staff on both sides. As the referee prepared to consult with the VAR official and review the incident on video, an important observation made by Atletico Madrid’s coach, Diego Simeone, may have influenced the final decision.

Simeone’s thinking was evident as he cleverly reminded both the fourth official and the referee of a similar incident that had taken place just hours earlier.

His prompt intervention highlighted how experience and sharp tactical awareness can play a role beyond just coaching from the sidelines.

What did Simeone say?

Once the play stopped, Simeone persistently urged the fourth official to send the referee to the VAR screen, emphasising the importance of reviewing the decision thoroughly.

“Why don’t you go see it? Let him go see it,” said the Atletico coach.

As Soto Grado began reviewing the footage, Simeone reiterated a critical point, referencing a similar incident from the Athletic Club vs Girona match earlier that day.

“It’s the same as in Bilbao! Same.”

The VAR footage showed Tchouameni stepping on Lino with his cleats. Although Soto Grado sought additional angles to gain a complete understanding of the challenge, De Burgos Bengoetxea informed him that the remaining images were unclear.

However, the initial footage provided enough evidence for the referee to make a decisive call.

Referee’s decision

Ultimately, Soto Grado awarded Atletico de Madrid a penalty. Julian Alvarez stepped up to take the spot-kick and executed a daring Panenka-style finish, successfully finding the back of the net.

Despite this crucial moment, Atletico’s hopes of securing victory were dashed when Kylian Mbappe responded with a goal for the opposition.

This incident highlighted not only the importance of VAR in modern football but also the tactical awareness of seasoned managers like Simeone, who can influence key moments through sheer knowledge of the game and sharp decision-making under pressure.
