Barcelona are knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the Round of 16 stage, after a deserved defeat to Cup fighters Athletic Club at San Mamés. Xavi’s side were second best for almost the entirety of the proceedings and were eventually beaten by the better side, after 120 minutes of cup football.

Barcelona started poorly, and found themselves behind within just two minutes, although were fortunate to be level at half-time following a screamer by Ferran Torres. Despite late drama towards the end of the 90 minutes, with goals from Iñigo Martínez and Pedri, it was Athletic who progressed to the Quarter Finals through an Iker Muniain penalty in extra time.

Xavi’s side will not only be disappointed with the result of Thursday night’s clash, but also with the performance. Barcelona were subpar to an excellent Athletic in almost every facet of the game, and more than deserved to exit the competition.
