Former Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Bristol City hero Albert Adomah could be a great signing for Walsall

On Tuesday morning, League Two outfit Walsall confirmed the signing of Albert Adomah, who left Championship side QPR following the expiration of his contract earlier this summer.

Last campaign, the Saddlers finished 11th in the fourth tier table but just five points behind the play-offs and will be hoping that Adomah can spearhead them towards a top-seven spot this time around.

Adomah could be a very dangerous player in League Two

The 36-year-old did not make the best account of himself during his four-year spell at QPR, after joining the Loftus Road outfit on a free transfer in October 2020.

The 2020/21 season was the wideman's best in R's colours, as he scored two goals and created five assists in 34 Championship appearances.

Then, during 2021/22, he came close to emulating those figures as he produced a return of two goals and four assists in 33 second tier outings.

But over the last two seasons, he scored just two goals in 58 appearances in all competitions, while last campaign he failed to register a single goal contribution.

However, Adomah should still be viewed as a good signing by the Saddlers as he is a Championship legend whose record for Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Bristol City speaks volumes.

During his best Football League season to date, Adomah scored 14 goals and made five assists for Villa during the 2017/18 second tier season, helping his side land a play-off spot.

The Ghana international also enjoyed successful seasons with Boro, as he scored 12 goals during the 2013/14 Championship campaign, before going on to help fire the Teessiders to the Premier League with a return of six goals and five assists two seasons later.

Meanwhile, in his best season for the Robins, the ace scored five goals and made 11 assists for the Ashton Gate side back in 2010/11, which epitomises his impressive longevity.

Now that he has dropped down two divisions to League Two, Adomah could be capable of re-discovering his form of old, which would bolster the Saddlers' promotion push and strike fear into League Two defenders.

Saddlers fans should look no further than David McGoldrick as evidence that 36-year-olds who used to be Championship stalwarts can cause problems in the fourth tier, as he scored 12 goals for Notts County last season.

Furthermore, the former Ipswich Town star also managed 22 goals in 39 League One appearances for Derby County during the 2022/23 campaign.

Walsall supporters will feel a League One return is overdue

The Saddlers were relegated from the third tier to League Two in 2019, and have not seriously threatened the play-off positions ever since, but just three years before their League One relegation, the Saddlers secured a third-place spot, and finished just one point behind Burton Albion, who earned automatic promotion to the Championship alongside Wigan Athletic in 2016.

But since venturing into the League One play-offs eight years ago, the Saddlers have been a regular feature in the bottom half of League Two, and will hope that this changes sooner rather than later.

After missing out on a play-off spot by five points last season, Walsall will hope that 2024/25 can be their year, while Adomah could be the man to fire them into the top-seven.
