From Champions League under the stars to a foggy night against Venezia. Juve drew for the fourth time in a row, the second consecutive stalemate at home, and were held to a 2-2 draw by the side who currently sit bottom of the Serie A standings.
Venezia came flying out the blocks from kick-off through Gaetano Oristanio, but the danger was averted thanks to Michele Di Gregorio. In the opening stages, Juve struggled to find create space, while the visiting team were enterprising on the counter-attack but lacked precision. Timothy Weah tried to use his pace down the right flank, but an offside flag in the 22nd minute thwarted a promising attack. Shortly after, Hans Nicolussi Caviglia tried to pick out Mikael Ellertsson from a corner, but the Bianconeri defence was alert to the threat.
Juve started to get a grip of the game: on the 10th minute, the Bianconeri created a good chance when Weston McKennie won a freekick of the edge of the area: but Dusan Vlahovic fired the set-piece over the crossbar. In the 16th minute, Kenan Yildiz did well down the right before finding Danilo, but the Brazilian's cross towards the back post was well watched by Gianluca Busio.
The turning point came in the 19th minute. An error by Nicolussi Caviglia allowed Yildiz to recover possession for Juve and win a corner. Khephren Thuram flicked on the resulting cross and Federico Gatti, who arrived with perfect timing, diverted the ball into the back of the net to break the deadlock.
After the Bianconeri had taken the lead, Venezia tried to react. In the 29th minute, they side came close to equalising through Magnus Andersen, who hit the crossbar after a Joel Pohjanpalo pass, with what was the best chance for the visitors. Shortly after, Thuram came to Juve’s rescue with a crucial intervention to block Busio’s shot.
The tempo dropped in the final minutes of the first half. In the 40th minute, Vlahovic tried to pose a threat but was closed down by Girogio Altare. In the two minutes of added time at the end of the half, a scramble in the Bianconeri's penalty area was eventually dealt with by the defence, who kept the score 1-0 at half-time.
Juve began the second half with great intensity, immediately looking to double their advantage. In the 50th minute they seemed to have done just that through Yildiz, who was quickest to react in the Venezia box, but VAR ruled out the goal due to a foul when winning the header. The pressure continued: in the 53rd minute, Thuram came close to scoring with a right-footed effort that went just over. Shortly after, Yildiz fired a right-footed strike towards the near post, but Filip Stankovic was alert to save the shot.
In the 61st minute Juve were rocked: Venezia equalised thanks to Ellertson, who met of a perfect cross from Zampano and to drill his header home. Despite the fightback, however, Juventus tried to react with the introduction of Douglas Luiz and Francisco Conceicao, who came on for Teun Koopmeiners and Weah respectively in the 65th minute. Vlahovic made his presence felt in the 67th minute with a cross-shot that deflected off Jay Idzes, forcing Stankovic into a great save. Vlahovic threatened again in the 72nd minute and came close to regaining Juve’s lead from Thuram's delivery, but the visitors' defence stayed strong.
In the 83rd minute, Venezia took the lead. A free kick kicked by Nicolussi Caviglia found the head of Idzes, who beat Di Gregorio with a perfect header. Now the situation was serious, and Juve found themselves in the same position as seven days ago against Bologna, searching for a late equaliser. In the 88th minute, Douglas Luiz went close to a spectacular goal with an overhead kick that grazed the post. Then, in the 93rd minute, the referee awarded a penalty to the Bianconeri for a handball by Antonio Candela in the box. Dusan Vlahovic stepped up to take the spot kick and coolly slotted past Stankovic to level the score.
