It’s a remarkable first half in Florence, as both Mike Maignan and David De Gea saved penalties from Fiorentina striker Moise Kean and Milan captain Theo Hernandez.

It was a great opportunity to break the deadlock at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in this evening’s Serie A encounter.

Kean stepped up and saw his fairly central effort well smothered by Maignan on the line.

This is the 12th penalty that Maignan has denied in his career, the fourth in the Milan jersey, although the most recent was way back in April 2023 from Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the Champions League quarter-final, conceding the next 11 in a row.

As for Kean, he’s not exactly a specialist, having previously taken only one penalty in his entire senior football career.

He did at least convert that for Everton in a 3-0 EFL Cup win over Salford City in September 2020.

Kean also scored the three he took at Under-21 level for Italy and Under-17 for Juventus.

Curiously, on the stroke of half-time, Milan were also awarded a penalty for Luca Ranieri’s challenge on Tijjani Reijnders.

Theo Hernandez stepped up on his birthday and when wearing the captain’s armband, hoping to perhaps make up for giving away the first spot-kick for his foul on Dodo.

However, De Gea turned back the clock to get down and palm it out of the bottom corner with one hand.

The France international left-back had missed two previous penalties in January 2022 and January 2024, converting the other four for Milan.

De Gea may have been out of action for a year before coming to Fiorentina, but he proved he’s still one of the greatest penalty specialists.

This was his 12th save out of a total 74 faced over his career, the most recent in May 2023 for Manchester United against Fulham.
