The BBC have issued an apology following some technical difficulties on-air, with the channel’s live ticker displaying a message about Manchester United during their tennis coverage.

Their live ticker at the bottom of the screen, which is used to keep viewers updated on news during broadcasts, displayed a message reading ‘Manchester United are rubbish’.

They have now apologised to Manchester United fans for the incident, admitting that a trainee accidentally published the message onto the ticker.

“A little earlier, some of you may have noticed something pretty unusual on the ticker that runs along the bottom of the screen with news, making a comment about Manchester United,” the BBC presenter said in the apology shortly after, as seen above.

“I hope Manchester United fans weren’t offended by it. Let me just explain what was happening. Behind the scenes, someone was training to learn how to use the ticker and to put text on the ticker.

“So they were just writing random things, not in earnest, and that comment appeared. Apologies if you saw that and you were offended and you’re a fan of Manchester United.

“But certainly, that was a mistake and it wasn’t meant to appear on the screen. That was what happened, we just thought we’d better explain that to you.”

Shortly after the message regarding Manchester United was shown on screen, another one read ‘Weather rain everywhere’ – certainly not fitting with the approach BBC News normally take.

In truth, it was a harmless mistake, and although the trainee will receive some stick for the ill-advised bulletin, hopefully no viewers took offence.
