This summer is proving to be a defining one for Manchester United.

INEOS are targeting some of Europe’s finest talents to help kickstart Ruben Amorim’s project at Old Trafford.

While much of the attention has been on attacking reinforcements, one could argue that if a quality player becomes available, United would be foolish to pass up the opportunity.

One such name is Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez.

Amorim is reportedly a huge admirer of the 22-year-old midfielder, a view that became clear in early May when United lodged a €30 million (£25.4 million) bid for his signature. That offer was rejected, but with the summer window now in full swing, the time may be ripe for United to return.

Spanish outlet Sport are running a piece suggesting Lopez may not be part of Hansi Flick’s team options at Camp Nou next season.

Lopez considered a necessary sale

Following the arrivals of goalkeeper Joan Garcia and winger Nico Williams, Barcelona’s financial situation has deteriorated further.

Selling a key asset, such as Lopez, could be vital to easing their financial strain.

Sport claims the Spanish champions are now open to offers, with United, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Chelsea all credited with interest.

But why would Barça sell a player adored by fans and seemingly trusted by Flick?

It comes down to a reshuffling of roles with the new signings, with Lopez among the casualties.

Lopez, the biggest loser in Nico Williams’ swoop

Williams’ arrival pushes Raphinha into the Number 10 role, intensifying competition in attacking midfield.

Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Pau Victor and Lopez, also options as 10s, are now left fighting for backup minutes.

Although Lopez can feature as a defensive midfielder, Barça’s technical bench believes his best work comes closer to the box.

Also, in that zone, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Pedri are already locked in as first-choice options.

Barça may not be desperate to offload him, but they are certainly willing to cash in.

It is believed a bid of €50 million (£42.3 million) would be enough to secure his departure.

Man United already shown intent, but will they go further?

The Red Devils have already made their interest clear.

The question now is whether they will raise their initial €30 million (£25.4 million) offer by the €20 million (£16.9 million) needed to meet Barça’s demands.

With a place in Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad up for grabs, Lopez, ambitious and eager for regular minutes, may be open to a move.

United would be wise to make their move. This could be the moment that unlocks the next level in Lopez’s game.

With eight goals and 10 assists across 46 appearances (only 19 of them starts) last season, his raw numbers reflect a player ready for more.

Who knows, he could be United’s heir to Bruno Fernandes.
