We had more Women’s Champions League action this Thursday with plenty big-name clubs playing across Europe.
Here is what went down.
Scorers: Nobbs 38′, Hurtig 45+1′, 78′; Piubel 76′
Arsenal made light work of ZĂĽrich on Thursday in a 3-1 win at the Emirates.
Throughout the opening 45 minutes, the hosts were in control of the pitch with 70% possession and six shots compared to two, though the visitors put all of their attempts on target.
Eventually, it took a bit of brilliance for the deadlock to break when Jordan Nobbs cushioned her volley with perfection, it hit the crossbar and fell into the net.
Then just before the break, Lina Hurtig’s looping header doubled the lead for the Gunners. The goal was her first for the club.
Coming out after the Gunners continued to dominate but struggled to put another effort into the back of the net and ZĂĽrich made things a one-goal game through Seraina SĂ©verin Piubel.
However, Hurtig would go on to make the night even more memorable on an individual after making things 3-1 two minutes later.
Scorers: Raysla 42′, Lacasse 59′; Rall 67′, Stanway 83′, 90+8′
Over in Portugal Benfica hosted Bayern Munich and the German club pulled off a stunning 3-2 comeback win.
The match was a fairly even contest between these two sides during the opening half with five of the seven combined shots hitting the target.
Eventually, the hosts took the lead just before the break when Cloé Lacasse drilled a cross into the box which Nycole Raysla slammed home for 1-0.
Coming out after the break Benfica would go on to double things with the Canadian attacker getting the best of goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs.
Bayern, however, would then hit right back and made things a one-goal game again thanks to defender Maximiliane Rall’s looping header.
The German side continued to turn up the heat and Georgia Standway found the equaliser with her first goal for the club before breaking Benfica’s hearts deep into injury time and completing the comeback.
Scorers: Horan 23′, Malard 52′ (OG)
Despite a plethora of injuries, Lyon’s core was able to quickly take control of the pitch at Juventus Stadium with Lindsey Horan and Danielle van de Donk pulling the strings.
Juventus, however, did not shy away at the other end registering seven shots compared to eight but none could find the target.
And that statistic proved to be the difference in the first half when a long ball from defender Wendie Renard found Horan in the box and the USWNT star’s close control made things 1-0.
Coming out after the break, however, Juventus ramped up the pressure. Julia Grosso went inches wide from an equaliser only for a mistake by Lyon to draw things level minutes later.
Barbara Bonansea drilled a cross into the box which defender Melvine Malard turned into her own net.
And despite a flurry of chances at either end throughout the second half, neither side could find the net again and things finished 1-1.
Scorers: Holdt 43′; Bonmati 30′, 41′, Caldentey 65′, 90+2′
Meanwhile over in Sweden, Barcelona picked up three points on the road after a 4-1 win over RosengĂĄrd.
It was one-way traffic throughout the opening 45 minutes as the visitors dominated the ball with 77% possession and 17 shots compared to two.
The hosts, however, limited Barcelona’s lethal attack from breaking the deadlock up until the half-hour mark.
Aitana Bonmati guided a low cross from Fridolina Rolfo into the net before securing a brace with a stunning curler roughly 10 minutes later.
Yet in incredible fashion, RosengĂĄrd then erased any clean sheet hopes as 21-year-old Olivia Holdt created enough space to shoot from outside the box for 2-1.
To make things worse for the visitors too, Caroline Graham Hansen was forced off in tears due to injury.
Coming out after the break, however, Barcelona’s brilliance proved to be too much as they eased any pressure off their shoulders in style.
Mariona Caldentey scored a brace of her own which included her picking up the ball in midfield and chipping the goalkeeper from halfway out.
The result means Barcelona are top of Group D while RosengĂĄrd are third.
