MIAMI, Florida – The United States’ campaign in the 2023 FIFA Under-20 Men’s World Cup in Argentina came to an end on Sunday with a 2-0 quarterfinal defeat to Uruguay at the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.

It was a rough start for the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship winners, as they found themselves behind 1-0 in the 21’ when Anderson Duarte was able to turn in a cross from the left wing for the opening goal.

The U.S. sought a response before the halftime whistle, but breaching the Uruguayan defense proved arduous, with a Joshua Wynder back-heeled flick off a corner kick representing their best scoring chance of the first 45 minutes.

Uruguay then doubled their advantage to 2-0 in the 56’ when a deep cross from the left flank came off the leg of Wynder and trickled into net.

Down two goals and going into the final half-hour, the urgency of the U.S. increased, but they were never able to find a way past the Uruguayan defense, succumbing eventually to the final whistle to mark their elimination from the tournament.
